“I thought the first half we were excellent, I thought that was the best half of the year, certainly on road. But that second half, especially the start of the 2nd half, we stopped playing the way we did in the first half.” – Caleb Porter
Having heard this quote immediately following a decent night at Mad Greek Deli, I had a bead on how I wanted to look at this game. First, I’d like to say this isn’t to scrutinize Porter’s comments. If I were in his position I’d be trying to give the press what they want to so I can get the hell out of dodge. The first half was positive in the context of poor form lately but it seemed as if both teams were squandering opportunities and the Timbers defensive lapses were a harbinger of the goals to come.
Look how quickly Dallas turns a poor Mattocks turnover (one of many) into an attack.
The Timbers got their licks in but Dallas had them on the ropes plenty, it was only a matter of time before they scored.
We graded the first half of the game overall at +0, completely neutral. The breakdown was +15 attacking, -6 Defense, and -9 in Possession. The +15 attacking score reflects not only the goal scored but the 4 shots on target. The -6 possession score from Darren Mattocks represents much of that -9 possession score as Mattocks was officially dispossessed twice with one unsuccessful touch while not completing a single attacking pass in his 59 minutes, losing possession on 3 maintenance passes.
Giving Nat Borchers +46 a rest and adding Jermaine Taylor +20 represented a pretty big swing in quality that affected the Timbers defensive structure. Taylor’s -8 was unexpectedly bad and when combined with Chara’s and Klute -8, you have a game that was neutral in it’s best moments and disastrous in it’s worst.
Speaking of, check out Chris Klute’s best defensive play all night… on Jermaine Taylor.
It was revealed on Saturday that Diego Chara suffered some kind of toe injury. We’ve noticed a pretty sharp decline in Chara’s play over the last few weeks and have wondered if he has been playing through injury.
It’s been subtle because Chara is very smart and positionally aware, but he’s been a boot short quite a bit lately. I had my man @JdSully8 put together some GIF’s of his game so you can decide for yourself. Scroll to the bottom for Chara’s player spotlight.
